FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can anyone learn to sing?
This is the most common question I am asked when I tell people that I am a singing teacher. My answer is that anybody can learn to sing as long as they have a healthy body and vocal equipment, motivation and a willingness to learn. I have successfully taught many students who have arrived thinking that they can’t sing, either because they have difficulty in pitching or because they have been told that their voice isn’t worth listening to. Everybody has a beautiful voice; you just need to learn how to use it.

How much do lessons cost?
Lessons cost £40 per hour or £30 for 45 minutes.

Are you DBS checked?
Yes. My current Disclosure and Barring Service certificate is always available to see on request.

How long is a lesson?
Lessons for adults are usually 1 hour, and for children usually 45 minutes.

How frequently should I have my lesson?
For children, one lesson a week during termtime is usual as this helps keep up momentum. Lessons can be booked during holiday periods if desired. For adults, it depends what fits with the rest of your schedule. Once a week or once a fortnight is most common.

When do you teach?
I teach during the daytime Monday – Friday, including some after-school slots. I also teach on Saturday mornings, and occasional evenings by request.

Where do you teach?
I teach from my home in the Wallands area of Lewes. I have a large, wooden-floored music room which has a great acoustic for singers.

Do you teach individuals or groups?
I teach one-on-one as this way I can focus more clearly on the technical needs of the individual student.

What is your cancellation policy?
Lessons which are cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice are charged at the normal rate. Discretion may be exercised in exceptional circumstances.

When are lessons paid for?
Lessons must either be paid for on the day of the lesson by cash or cheque, or in advance by bank transfer, cash or cheque. Lessons may be paid for individually or as a block.

How often should I practise?
Those students who practise efficiently and regularly usually improve more swiftly than those who don’t. In an ideal world, you should try to find time to practise every day, even if it is only for a short time. However, for those with busy schedules who are not professional singers, this is usually impractical. In this case, as much as you can find time for.
